Nancy Hays Hills shared her beautiful Coptic bound journals with FotA during the May 2022 meeting.
In this workshop we will use the single needle technique to make a Coptic bound book, approximately 6½ x by 10 inches closed, 13 x 10 inches when fully opened. This non-adhesive structure features an exposed spine with visible chain stitching that lays completely flat when open, making it ideal for journals. Each participant will make one blank book to fill as you see fit! Conservation quality materials, including Nancy's preferred Arches Text Wove paper, will be provided.
You need only bring yourself and a pencil.
If you have any of the following you may wish to bring them:
small self-healing mat, appx. 12 x 8½ inches (Please do not bring anything larger)
12 inch ruler
small awl
bone folder
There is no need to buy anything before the workshop. A list of supply
sources will be provided after the workshop, should you wish to buy
tools or materials to make additional books.
We will have a one hour break for lunch.
If you have any questions about the book making process, please contact Marcia Watt at marcia.watt@pobox.com

“Weaving words”
Blending calligraphy with the textile arts
Two ONLINE evening sessions
26 • 27 April | 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time
$35
Inspired in traditional textiles we will try to rescue their weaving technique, designs, graphics, motifs and color palettes. We will search for the color scheme, predominant & complimentary colors and accents. Study their designs, the character of line and drawings, the texture and pattern in order to mingle and blend calligraphy with the textile arts. With this knowledge we will design alphabets that will resemble our textiles. It’s my intention to share with you my own experimentation and findings and hope you will find new solutions to your calligraphic compositions from this new perspective. We will add stitches and even make books with the use of the sewing machine.
So let´s start weaving!
and again for your convenience:
